He told me that he used to be the biggest nerd ever in middle school and when he arrived in highschool everyone started criticizing how he dressed and talked. Because of all the criticism he started changing his speech and style. Now it is so hard for him to stop using slang and cussing at every sentence. Can the people in highschool put that much effect on you?

Yes...Peer( friend) acceptance is the most important thing to a teenager. This is called peer pressure. Fitting in is without a doubt what is up most on most teenagers mind. Be it fashion, or cars, or attitude, or whatever. What our friends think about us means so much during these difficult years.

Peer pressure can do lots of things to a teenager to change them and their direction. Those are formative years and when we are the most vulnerable to our friends and the pressure of fitting in. He, however, can change this behaviour and way of talking. If it's important enough to him he'll do his best to get a grip on the language. Tell him if it's offensive to you and others. He probably doesn't even realize he does it as much as he does.

It could also be who he currently hangs out with. If you hang out with people long enough you have a tendancy to pick up each others speech habits, sociolaly this makes sense because you can communicate better. You can see this with verbage, slang usage, as well as with accents or dialects.

Obviously he isnt comfortable with being himself. He seems to want to please the masses of people to "be cool".
