My theory is that it is because it gave ancient man an advantage in combat. All sorts of things were decided a long time ago through individual combat (like animals rut today) and I would think that grabbing someone by the beard would give you a distinct advantage in a fight.
This site http://www.quikshave.com/time line.htm gives a historical timeline of shaving but doesn't mention my theory. It's anyone's guess really - we just know it does go back a long way in time.

It must have been back in the days when a lot more wild animals roamed the Earth. Man had to shave so that his missus didn't mistake him for an ape. Come to think of it some of the apes nowadays that do shave could be a mistake.

I've found that a clean-shaved face does three things:
1) Helps me look and feel better than if I'm wearing a Beard
2) Helps me be more confident when talking to women and thus ensures I get taken seriously
3) Simple hygiene is improved by loads

He probably started shaving during the stone age, when he started developing sharpened stone implements.
And the reason?
To keep the nits and fleas from falling from his beard into his food.

not all men need to shave , some USA Indians don't, but i suppose the answer to your question is who wants a mouthful of hair when eating and doing something different to attract the opposite sex

because women end up with stubble rash from kissing stubly itchy scratchy men, and men (and women) couldn't play away from home without getting caught out! So men started shaving to hide the evidence!
