If this laptop is only gonna be use for school and browsing the Internet. You can find ones that will do just fine at a cheap price.
On the laptop Look and see if it says Centreno Mobil Processor. That means it has a built in wireless card INSIDE of the laptop and will be able to pick up on any wireless signal. Which almost any new laptop you buy will have one. If the laptop you buy does not. You can easily get a wireless card for it that goes into the side of it.

As for your wireless. If your using DSL. That requires a phone line. If your using Cable modem. That requires a cable line. You can place the modem and wireless router anywhere you choose to in the house. It will Transmit a signal all around that her laptop will pick up.

I install wireless networks, phones, and cable for a living. Feel free to e-mail me if you want to know more or have questions. I'll be glad to help you out.

You need wireless access.

If she's not near a hotspot, you need to get a broadband Internet (cable in your case) and purchase a wireless router so the laptop can have wireless access.

All laptops these days come with a wireless card built-in. 802.11a/b/g is what you are looking for when checking for a wireless card in a laptop. Even laptops that are in the sub-$500 have everything you need for wireless connection.

They will install the router to your DSL modem. Your laptop has a wireless adapter so when they are done you will be able to turn your laptop on and connect to the internet. If you want to use your DSL before they come to install the wireless router you need to attach either the ethernet cable or the usb cable that came with your DSL modem directly to the computer. If you have problems with that call your ISP and they can walk you through it.

thers no phone line? i don't think wireless is that advanced yet unless your in a hotspot. hopefully she's in a very built up area where she can turn her wireless on and hope that somebody in the area is using a wireless router that has no security so she can pinch there connection.

be careful though it is illegal to use other peoples internet.

the other suggestion is to get satelite internet but it is very expensive

It works using a cell phone line, but it can't be used as a cell phone it snapps in to the lap top and transmitts a signal to the internet server.
