Familiarity Breeds Contempt Proverb

2016-12-15 04:35:34 · answer #2 · answered by sun 4 · 0 0

Wow serious Q here. It seems it is almost like U only hurt the ones U love kind of thing. Maybe the more familiar we are with someone, there R times we just are sick of some of their ways, or could it be we just get bored and that breeds contempt...more like the grass is greener on the other side thing....until U get there. I am no doctor, but it does seem that many people take the ones they know best, and who love them for granted, and are all to ready to find all their faults and then there comes the contempt...but there could be another side, like maybe a person has hidden jealousy or anger at the person, a great breeding ground for contempt. Or just maybe in some situations the contempt one feels towards another, may really be the contempt they feel for themselves. Communication is the key in all relationships.

It means that when you first meet someone or are in a new situation, you tend to put that person/thing on a pedestal. It's called the "honeymoon" period. After awhile, you begin seeing the flaws, the rose-colored glasses get taken off and, all of a sudden, you're not so enamored with that person/thing. In other words, getting to know someone births disgust.

A person or a thing that is quite familiar is often not held in high esteem ,while a stranger who may not be half worthy would be duly respected. A stranger always commands the attention while a person who is familiar would be slighted. We too do this.
