If I am understanding you correctly, and you have currently a 1GB stick in and you want to put in a 512 stick, it will work fine. If the 512 stick is a slower speed, it will slow the 1GB stick down. As for dual channel, if you only have 1 stick in there right now, you are NOT running dual channel. Adding the 512 stick gives you the possibility, although somewhat small, of running in dual channel mode. (Some motherboards will run dual channel with sticks of different sizes, most will not).

That relies upon on which working device you have, and what you utilize your computing gadget for. 512MB is critical while you're working domicile windows XP. in case you had 1GB on XP it may be the grasp at multitasking. 2GB is stated for mushy operation in domicile windows Vista/domicile windows 7. in the journey that your gaming 4GB is robust. something greater would be overkill. you're interior the overkill zone, so except you're working 2 intense end video games concurrently with Firefox open with 20 tabs and characteristic iTunes and Limewire and Anti-Virus, and a few random different crap that i will no longer be able to think of of all engaged on a similar time, you will by no potential use 6GB of RAM.

9 out of 10 you would be OK ! but you would not be running dual channel, it will be 64 bit operation.

It would work fine unless both therir speeds are different. RAM modules are measured by memory capacity and speed. It doesn't matter what capacity both the modules are but they should be of same speed
