Well if you feel uncomfortable then say so, but if this person still insists on your feedback and says they want an unbiased opinion then tell them the truth. You can be tactful and respectful and still give an honest answer. Does "it looks awful" mean it does not fit well, it's too short, it's the wrong color or style, it's not something they should be wearing at their age or what? You could always just say something like no I don't particularly like that outfit on you, it does not flatter you or bring out your best features. Or ask them what look they were going for and answer based on that. If you really don't feel comfortable then just say you would prefer not to comment and leave it at that.

I would show them what I am seeing on the outfit that is making it look awful. If they are asking for your opinion, best to be honest. Many years of working retail. I am very good at persuading people to try something different.

I try to be as respectful and tactful as possible in telling them how it looks on them, in my opinion. But I have added that if they like it that is all that counts. I don't think Staci or Clinton, from "WHAT Not To Wear", is gonna show up and insult the poor person.

I am the type of person that can never say anything that would hurt someone's feelings. I wouldn't say NO but maybe suggest a different style or size.

I'd suggest a better looking outift for him, and if he is a good-looking guy, then I'd suggest we go to the changing room together

I say, "it's ok, but maybe you should try this colour/style..." and then smile and leave. I hate talking to strangers.
