If not, then what is the official definition of a polymer and why wouldn't this fit that criteria?

Yes it is.

DNA is the polymer of units called nucleotides

A nucleotide is composed of phosphoric acid residue+ sugar (deoxyribonucleose from this comes the letter D) and a base.

The base can be thymine, adenine, guanine or cytosine.

This base s forms the genetic code
