Well, the simple answer is that you have to develop a sporting culture. In India still parents tell their children to not waste time playing sports and concentrate on their studies. Also this culture of grading people that the top scores should go in science than commerce and then arts. Its not just sports that has suffered but other fields to. Look at are law enforcement and lawyers they are a shame to society at large. People should be encouraged to pick proffessions they are interested in. And it is exactly because of the 100 crore population that we don't have any sports. How are we supposed to develop facilities when there is not enough accommodation for people. How can we improve sports when the quality of life is so low here. The western countries have made cut throat societies and basically ensured the survival of the fittest while we let the rotten people survive by doling out charities everywhere on the streets etc when they should be putting them in jails for begging and shitting on the streets. How is this going to promote excellence? Plus the politicians want a piece of everything in the country including sporting revenues so they cripple the system with red tape. You will find many examples of unnecessary govt officials travelling to olympic venues when that money could have been used wisely towards providing players a good diet and accommodation there.

I have no idea where your from ! are you Indian ? Australias preocupation with Sport is the reason why we finish just behind the World Super Powers on the medal count at each Olympics these days. Our climate, vast open spaces, sports loving culture and competitiveness plus the $ Millions they pump into sport each year here. Our local competitions are extreamly strong and generally well organised ! Its more than anything part of our culture. In India you may not have the same opportunity, money space or place enough importance upon Olympic events, although Cricket is extreamly popular there ! But I still think we'll win the World Cup ! Oh and our population is very small at only 20 Million !

Where is the facility for the players and athelitics in our country. First provide all the necessary facilities to them then expect Gold.

There is no sports culture in India, low fitness level of players, less facilities to the players, no transperent system of selecting the players at national level, less attention by the governement towards sports ane many more reasons.

number of gold medals does not depend on population of any country... we should not underestimate ourselves... if given facilities and protection against favouritism and corruption in sports and games we can excel in this field as others do...

the big business houses, industrialists, TV channels, government agencies, film stars... and many more have lot of spare money... however they do not come forward to invest it in sponsoring sports...

Sahara have sponsored cricket for promoting themselves... such business houses should sponsor all sports and games then only you should expect gold medals in international competition... lest who will take responsibility of the career and bread & butter of sports persons... you cannot leave them starving without livelihood...
