There are two computers I have seen which look good, either:

1. Dell Dimension E520, with AMD Athlon 64 X" Dual-Core Processor 5000+ and 256MB ATI RADEON X1300 Pro Graphics Card for €929

or

2. Dell Dimension E520 with Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6300(1.86GHz, 2mb Cache, 1066 MHz FSB) and 256MB nVidia GeForce 7300LE Turbocache graphics card for €1064

Everything else is exactly the same, so which one is better?

Ignore the last guy and his 64 bit rambling. Both of these chips are capably of running either a 32 bit or 64 bit operating system. The two are roughly equal in performance, I would say go with the cheaper of the two, which in this case would be the E520. In general the Core 2 Duos are superior, but in the case we have a fairly low end Core 2 Duo compared to a fairly high end Athlon, so it about evens out.

As for whether to run a 64 bit or 32 bit OS, 64 bit is a little better, but do be prepared to run into a few more compatibility issues. Keep in mind what I said, just because AMD put the 64 in its name (a clever way to confuse people, such as the first guy who answered) does not mean that it is any more or less capable of running 64 bit, or 32 bit than the Intel Core 2 Duo.

E6550. It will perform magnificently and I speak from experience. AMD has yet to perfect their dual cores to compete with Core2 duo. In dual core segment , C2Duo is still the king. But then again , you dont need that much power if your using Internet or watching movies, music. The only reason to get a core2duo is doing things like dvd ripping, rendering and mostly gaming. TAKE AMD, with the money saved get an Ati x2600 pro PCI EXPRESS or atleast a 8500 GT. Believe me you wont regret it.

The 5000+ amd cpu is faster, but remember its also 64bit and to take advantage of that everything will have to be 64 bit.

You will have to run xp 64bit edition, windows server 2003 64bit, linux 64, or vista. In addition, all your applications and drivers will need to be 64 bit, 32 bit stuff tends to break in a 64 bit os.
