i know most of the tourists wear western clothes, but i love saris, i think they give you an elegance that's hard to achieve in western garb (and they're probably more adapted to the weather)... what will the locals think? would i look ridiculous? i wouldn't want to wear anything too complicated, just a nice coloured cotton/muslin one; my hair is pretty much the same as my avatar's... also i've got a tattoo on my back, would it be a problem? thank you :)

No, you won't look ridiculous. Most places I've visited people really appreciate tourists making an effort. Also, most women wear saris in India, so you wouldn't look odd at all. My wife has blonde hear and gray eyes and our friends in India commented how nice they thought she looked in her sari. Go and enjoy yourself!

You would be better off in a sari, you will be less of a target, every western woman I know who has been to India has had a hell of a time, where ever they go they got groped and harassed by Indian guys who seem to think that western women are easy, all the women complained about little strange men just walking up to them and grabbing their breasts, and other disgusting behaviour.

You are quite right about the adaptation thing. When I was in India, I got myself a few "Mundle's" which is a cloth that men twine around their waste (like a damned skirt) but the cotton was cool and everyone enjoyed seeing me wear them. The nice thing was that one could lift the mundle on the side and fold it over the waist, so that you get a cool breeze under it when walking.
Go for it - and get yourself a silk sarie for evenings too.

Saree is an elegent dress but it needs the art of tying it. For a new comer, it may be difficult. Even after you have tied it, managing it is rather difficult. In that state of confusion you may feel embarassed.
I suggest you wear Punjabi Suits, these are easy to wear, easy to manage and look smart on anyone.
Welcome to India.

You would look gorgious, and no one would look at you thinking your mis using the sari, infact all the women would be so made up to see you wearing one then any of the so called western cloth's.
so please feel comfortable and don't even think you would be upsetting any one.as for the western cloth's you could give them a total miss.
you would love wearing a sari trust me.

I don't think you need worry what the locals think, saris are developed for the local climate and it makes more sense to wear them when you're out there - I certainly would! I think they look beautiful, actually.
