various depth causes various wavelength from the sun. in other word, as you go down the ocean, less light penentrates. this is proved by the fact that it gets darker when the depth increases. a photosynthetic pigment is specific for a narrow range of wavelength, therefore different pigment is needed when you have different wavelength.
