Octopi are not Pets. They are very shy creatures spending most of their time hidden in their shelters and require major care and specific conditions. You can buy them however if you are not a seasoned saltwater aquarist, with the background knowledge of owning these kinds of creatures, you may be very dissapointed. Between lighting, housing and feeding requirements, get ready to open the wallet and clear your schedule.

Depending on the size and type (and just so you know, fish stores and sellers don't always know the exact species they are selling) they can run $250 and up. I had often thought I would like to add one of these wonderful creatures to my collection of saltwater creatures. After months of research and speaking with many people, Even I after 30 some years of salt water won't attempt to house one.
Be sure to research the type, habitat and feeding totally before you jump in with both feet.
Good luck

Dont do it. save the money and trouble, they die to fast either natural causes or because they have gotten out (again) LOL
I tried twice, the first guy wouldn't stay in the tank and I had EVERY possible exit covered, found him under the tank stand dry as a bone one day. The other one lasted a year and a half but never seemed very happy in captivity.
They are verrrrrrrrrrrry smart, and should probably not be kept as pets.

We had one for a short time, and while it was very cool, I wouldnt recommend them. They only have a life span of about 1-2 years, and since you get them already mature they typically only live 6-8 months in tanks. (ours lived 8). We paid about $90 for him and that was a price break since he had been sitting at the pet store for a few months. You have to make sure you have the right equipment, sealed tank and filter system. And they have to be kept alone in the tank, they'll kill your fish/shrimp etc.

the thing about octopi is that they are escape artists--being boneless, they can fit into any opening their beak can get thru..you have got to prepare for that, and every single hole in your tank must be covered with some fine mesh, or itll slip out and youll find octupus jerky on the floor somewhere...and please, please. PLEASE never consider a blue ringed octopus, they are deadly toxic and only live a few months...
