or story in general, should you create a general outline first and then flesh it out or not? please consider that i am a total dork who thinks very organizationally. i have general ideas, and also some random specific things, but get stuck easily trying to fit them together.

I'm going to use really simple examples here....

1. Come up with a premise.
ex. John goes to the store to buy milk and fights off aliens on the way.

2. Break it down in beginning, middle, and end.
Ex. Beg: Joe realizes he needs milk.
Mid: Joe fights aliens off on the way to get milk.
End: Joe buys milk.

3. Research characters and the world/environment they are in. You should know EVERYTHING about your characters.

4. Choose plot points. Plot points turn the story in a different direction.
ex. Plot Point One: When Joe leaves the house, an alien jumps him. This turns the story in a totally different direction.

5. Write down lists of scenes that you want. Begin to organize them in a coherent order (use post-its.)

6. Make a detailed "step outline", outlining each scene.

With enough research and preliminary notes, writing the script is the easy part.

Also, check out a couple books....

Good Luck.

I easily have written many screenplays. i've got tried to place in writing many greater. maximum suitable written action picture in what way? maximum suitable communicate? Princess Bride. maximum suitable tale? Indiana Jones and the final marketing campaign. maximum suitable written? Silverado. admired Shakespeare play in what way? they are all great. i've got not got any admired one, yet I easily have quite a few that i do no longer shield. do no longer incredibly shield any Kaufman screenplay. people who do tend to be pretentious non-screenwriters who desire to look psychological to others.
