Anything is possible, but considering that it is a Chrysler product maybe you should consider using a 318 or a 360. I have seen a few cherokee's with the 360 (5.9ltr) engines in them.

I would imagine from doing multiple engine swaps that staying with one manufacturer will cut costs and difficulty

You should be able to. We put a bored over 350 into a CJ7, with some minor alterations (new) to motor mounts.

I think there is even a kit availiable for 350 or 305 GM
