how do you explain excited state?

The excited state is the state of higher energy than the ground state. In an excited state, there is an electron that has moved to an upper electronic state.
For Na, the ground state is 1s2 2s2p6 3s1. Therefore, the next excited state would be,I guess, 3p1 instead of 3s1.
For Al, G.S.: 1s2 2s2p6 3s2p1; E.S.: 1s2 2s2p6 3s1p2
H: 1s2 E.S.: 1s1p1
