Most of the answerers above have made excellent points for and/or against your question, with a select few being rather convincing.

As a veteran fence-sitter on controvertial topics like this, I can see how both sides of this argument believe wholeheartedly they are right, however in this case I believe it is important to remember that we are hypothesizing on a potential future event, which is by definition not precisely predictable.

There are so many variables involved in this equation that even the world's best mathematician would only be able to give you a percentage probability one way or the other as to the chances of it occuring.

I am myself a theoretical analyst and philosopher, and I can tell you the chances of the USA no longer being the number 1 superpower in the world in the next 20 years is more than 65% and less than 90%, however the USA will remain quite high on the international power ladder for a relatively long time afterwords.

You may be interested to know, in the same period of time in other areas of the world, Russia, Canada, Europe (particularly Northern and Western Europe), South Pacific Islands, and South East Asian countries will drop considerably in political power.

With countries like China, India, Australia, most of African Continent, Most of South American Continent, Middle Eastern Countries, Eastern European Countries, and (the wildcard) Antarctica will rise considerably in political power, it seems that the global centres of political power will shift to areas that have enjoyed very little power to date.

This shift will undoubtedly proceed very gradually, over a period of decades, but there will be sudden catalyst events that will bring this changing reality to the fore occasionally. Some of these events could include a dramatic change in the number of national representatives that sit on the United Nations Council from each country, the strength of certain currencies, the popularity of certain languages, differences in standard of living, immigration policy changes, or changes to religious propaganda and discrimination laws as they relate to the media, public displays of devotion, clothing, social gatherings, etc.

America isn't really in decline, but the Chinese economy is growing at an enormous rate. Their economy is growing so rapidly because they were very low on the economic totem pole. Think about it. If you have 10x and I have 100x, adding one more will be a 10% increase for you and only a 1% increase for me.

I'm not worried. Our economy is fine and I am thrilled that everyday life is improving in China; I saw it for myself a couple of months ago.

On the other hand. There is a likelihood that the Chinese economy is a Potemkin Village. There banking system is a shambles; there are not enough assets to cover their loans. Environmentally, they are a wreck too. Let's not even get into human rights! If you fly over India, you see a much more promising infrastructure than in China.

I find it confounding that Americans and Western Europeans are worried that Asian economies are improving. Aren't we better off with Toyotas and Nikons? Doesn't the competition ensure better and cheaper consumer products? In a free market, the other guy's misery doesn't mean that you prosper.

I wouldn't have much experience in politics BUT:

America is a country that was rising in the 90's, it's time has come and is slowly going. China is no longer an inwardly focused country and is aggresively expanding its influence abroad. It's acting with a newfound confidence on account of its growing economic might. America's economy flagged in the second half of the last year and the dollar has dropped significantly among other curriencies.
And not just economy, The US has started to make decisions that are hurting its popularity and importance. With the US tied down in Iraq, a new superpower HAS arrived.

The sentiment favored by the chinese can be heard a lot these days in Africa(where China is building roads and railways) and in Brazil(where China has fueled a booming export trade) and even in Thailand. Though the country's appetite for raw materials and many investments, the world's most populous country has already transformed economies from Angola to Australia. China has established itself as a key dealmaker in nuclear negotiations with NK, allied itself with Russsia in order to shape the future of Asia, and done much more. It's rising to the seat of power very fast and leaving the falling US economy behind.

I can't say that China will ever be the next largest super power, but I can say American is in decline for the simple fact that everybody is too worried about being politically correct. People and the Govt are soooo worried about offending someone we cant anything accomplished. Iraq is a great example. We can't get what needs to be done over there because if we went in full force and "truly" took over, we offend all the leading muslim countries. It's really disturbing when an airport that has been hanging Christmas trees for 50 years every Christmas can't because someone threatened to sue them if they didn't take them down. I really believe that if the airport in Atlanta hadn't taken the trees down the guy would have sued and WON! I understand this country was based on diversity, and freedoms. But how free is this country when you can't even celebrate the most popular holiday of the year that has been around for centuries without fearing a law suit. That is my opinion why America is in decline.

China is in a boom, we owe a lot of money to them, Clinton started this and Bush made is far far greater just like the deficient. As far as China becoming a superpower will not happen simple reasons excluding the United States are Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Russia, India just to name a few. People who have been criticizing Bush for being friendly with India, now guess why.
The US will gain it momentum economically too. We just need to stop these biased free trades and make them equal for us too, and we need a President that is not for the NWO (remember Bush Sr State of the Union Address, Bush Jr's actions and also Clinton.) Now why are they all very close to each other??
Stop the brain drain and don't buy into the propaganda media and the United States will never see the fate of Rome. Remember Rome fell from within not without.

Depends on the direction the world is going. China controls in the manufacturing; whereas India controls the technical world and customer services. Everything that we buys, seems to be made in China. Everything technical product seems to have customer services in India only. If we are going the direction of computer technology, India will take over. If we are going the direction of the old manufacturer world from Operation Management that the idea came from United States but Japan really made actions the idea, China will take over.

What happened? We need only look at the histories of all the great powers in our world. From the Romans to the British, all of the great empires and powers saw a fall from grace and dominance based on the rise of another global rival.

Historically, no global power has ever been able to retain its strength indefinitely. Looking at the state of the US currently, it is obvious that we are proceeding down the path that so many civilizations have taken before us.

Costly conflicts and wars are demoralizing the population, while our coffers are quickly depleting. Industry and commercial buisnesses are now relocating their production to other nations, which is always a bad sign.

Why do they say it? Because they've actually cracked open a history book, my friend.

China is called, "The Sleeping Giant". They have opened their borders for trade with the rest of the world. They are be coming an industrialized society. China will rival the US in the consumption of oil. China is already the major exporter of goods to the US. Major US corporations have established businesses in China. The US has 300 million people. China has 3 billion people. Do the math. My niece is studying Chinese in grade school. We are becoming a global community. The US will preserve if we lead by example. We have to learn to share with the entire planet.

It is a reflection of the embarassing Gloom and Doom Guy Dubya Bush, he has succeeded in making everyone upset for 6 years. The idea of mein kumpf was the big lie to incite people in anger against something that was life threatening and this is the same strategy that bush used on us after the WTC 9/11 tragedy.
Of which is another subject?hmmmm? Now you have total Chaos and yet there is hope with this Country if we start taking responsibility and shake that cowardly fear we all have been infected with! Hell if 19 year old men and women can go over to that third world piss hole Iraq and give their lives we can at least sit here and do something about our internal problems and get rid of the pestilence that has infected the white house(our house, we the peoples), with cockroaches and rats and blood sucking mosquitoes! We can stand up and be counted on when push comes to shove to make our elected officials do their god damned jobs and start endicting these traitors one by one two by two like Noahs ark and ship them off to intern them for trial! Endict them! We the people have got to clean our government, that is the definition of politics to clean government, and then as good statesman/woman we must take part in revising our own laws, not let that punk put up that patriot act, a propose fear tactic! and then introduce you to fascism of martial law? to hell with all of them! China will take over if we do not do something and that is for sure! they cannot be trusted at all. What they want they will take, they won't negotiate with Bush that is a lie! Do you remember he told them before he took office via a talk show, "I am going to show China we are a force to reckon with!" Then he took office and after he agreed with china no more spy planes, he lied again and they got our plane? He demanded it like the punk that he is? and the Chinese told him when they were done inspecting it and no sooner! Then he went there to broker his sales items to the president of China? And what happened? " Me and the president have agreed to disagree? " What a jerk! He woke the sleeping dragon and now we will really have to watch it! The Chinese have brokered their own deals, Africa, Iran, Israel, et al. And unless we get rid of this punk and all his punk friends and foreign fiends, we are in for a war of all wars against everyone! Lift that bail and tote that barge if the Chinese come that is what you and I will be doing they are the worst slave drivers in history! Ever seen the Wall? You know who built it? Do you know how many people are buried along side of each brick? They are buddhist and they do not believe in our ways at all. Human life is cheap, and they will kill you without a wink!

whether this is going to happen or not but one thing is certain that the chinese are hardworking and dedicated in their work. it is dominating in the production front like toy industry etc., and also the economy is also one major advantage. so if not becoming a superpower, china will emerge as one of the powerful countries in the world in a near future along with india.
