Doomsday I sneeze at. He was an one-shot character that DC developed because they wanted to "kill" Superman, and they needed someone who could do it, and look believable doing it. Nowadays, yeah, he's tough and rough and could kick some butt, but you don't see him knockin' anyone off.
Galactus is quite powerful indeed, but ... he's waaayyy past the title of superhero, up there with the cosmic forces with the likes of Eternity, Fate, Spectre, Living Tribunal, etc., etc. Then again you did ask the most powerful comic book character...
So wouldn't the title of most powerful comic book character go to Thanos, at the time of his existence when he had the Infinity Gauntlet and the Infinity Gems; able to control all aspects of the universe, taking out superheroes left and right - taking on the celestial beings I listed above and more, without breaking a sweat?
(Granted, it WAS his own psyche and ego that did him in... but what if he had complete control of himself and that glove?)

Considering the question you asked the actual answer is kind-of off putting since the character is no longer this powerful however, you" did say ever"so the answer is Thanos w/ the Infinity Gauntlet. He gained power over the aspects of all powers in all dimensions- Power, Mind, Space, Reality, Time, and the Souls of all living creatures. Dark Phoenix would simple have been turned to dust with but a thought from Thanos. Mistress Death at the time was at his side when he decided to destroy half of the entire galaxy. He stated he would use only a fraction of his power to destroy all of Marvels Heroes in a battle.(This would be his undoing thanks to Nebula). Thanos laid waste to every Marvel Super Hero save Adam Warlock- and Silver Surfer. He also obliterated every "God" ie Galactus, In-Betweener, etc... - in Marvel. Eternity and The Living Tribunal survived simply because they stayed neutral in the affair. As far as Superman lol please. It's laughable to think Superman could have stopped Thanos. (Remember all Dimensions were under Thanos's control) That would include DC. Even in a crossover no one could have beaten him. The only one who could have beaten Thanos was Thanos, and he did with his ego

The Spectre. He was created by the same guys who came up with Superman and has supernatural power, the likes of which Superman as no defense against. He is more powerful than Apocalypse, Doomsday, Thanos, Hulk, Galactus, the Beyonder, Shazam, and all those other guys.

I got you right now. DOOMSDAY! Let's not forget about the real most powerful character EVER in a comicbook. He KILLED SUPERMAN with his BARE HANDS! He ****** damn near everybody up! He can't be killed, he ALWAYS returns IMMUNE TO WHATEVER ****** him up, he's a bioengineered MONSTER! After luckily being ressurected, Superman-with the HELP of some supernatural friends-had to jump Doomsday and throw him THROUGH THE END OF TIME so he wouldn't have a place to return to. DOOMSDAY=MOST POWERFUL EVER. Nothing could stop him except the end of all existence! Lets be serious here. Pussy *** Superman COULDN'T BEAT HIM one on one in a fair fight. I rest my case.

After seeing what Galactus did at the end of Annihilation, I'll go with the Devourer of Worlds in a landslide

those are all great choices of the most powerful character.... but seems that maybe you are over looking the subtle, awesome abilities, capabilities and strengths of Dr. Fate..... not one of the more popularly read titles I know... but while reading them I found this to be a character that has limitless abilities, powers.... strength....
