PC sound problem?

Recently (as of today), all of my sound has gone completely from working perfectly to being dead-silent! I checked the volume control settings, and my sound should be working, but it isn't. Is there something I haven't thought of, or is my sound card shot? This is a semi-new computer, so I would be pretty upset if it was the sound card.

Check all your connections again, and if you have a pet that might chew wires, you should look for a break somewhere.

go to control panel>sounds and audio devices and make sure the proper sound card for output is selected under the hardware tab
