The main reason Dungy didn't kick the field goal was because it wasn't worth the risk of getting one blocked and run back for a touchdown, making it a one possession game. By doing this Dungy forced Chicago to drive down the field to get their points which would cripple them because there would be far less time to score again and they would probably have to use their time outs in the process. Basically it was their best chance to put the game away.

Dungy has enough class to not run up the score. Besides when you do that it tells people you have no respect and they WILL return the favor.

Mostly out of respect for other pros.
But imagine a blocked field goal fo a td (Hester returned a fg for a td this year). and then a successful onside kick. 1 in 10,000 but imagine if it had happened.
Dungy did precisely the right thing.

the game was already over. if you have respect for the game and the team you are playing you don't run up the score. lovie smith is one of dungie's best friends. you don't rub it in that you just beat your best friend in the biggest arena of your chosen profession. you leave that to college football.
