I have a Russian dwarf hamster. He recently developed an abscess and I kinda disregarded it because it was fairly small and I looked online and it said that it would drain. Now, it's gotten bigger and I'm really worried. I'm taking him to the vet but I want to know, is there going to be any consequences because I failed to take action when I first noticed it? I heard that the vet will lance it but is that safe? I'm really worried because he's so small and I want the best for him. PLEASE HELP!!!

Lancing and draining the abcess is the best solution, that infection needs to get out of there. They will also probably start him on some antibiotics and possibly some pain medication. Its hard to say if there will be any consequences, depends on whether or not the infection has gone systemic (into the bloodstream). Just encourage him to eat and drink as much as you can and make sure he's in a nice warm, draft free place. Good luck

CS gave the best possible answer... a vet will need to lance that. It can be done safely and a vet will be very careful & professional.

Kudos to CS's answer. And good luck with your little hammy. I hope that he'll be ok.

ive had 5 hamsters in my lifetime and I have one thats still living so i guess i know abit about this subject. my friends hamster had the exact same thing...and it had surgery done to it. and it was fixed for awhile but they waited too long to get it removed. go to a vet that will work with hamsters and see what your options are. Id say get it surgically removed. I have a love for hamsters so i know how you feel! hope everything turns out good :)

One of my hamsters also had to be lanced and drained cuz of infections...these infection pockets accure alot in hamsters...From what the vet told me is that IF we didn't get her taken care of she may die...but since we did get her taken care of she lived to be a healthy old age....she died at age 4....Please get him to the vet and get him taken care of before it is too late...

good luck!
