Out of courtesy, I informed my immediate boss that I will be tendering my resignation. He asked me what can he do to hold me back? I wanted to leave because of the distance (I takes about 2 hrs & 20 mins per day on travelling to work). The new place takes me about 1 hour travelling time. Another reason is because of the workload. Before we took over an ex-colleague tasks, we had informed our boss to look for a replacement as soon as possible and that was since Sept 06. Till now nothing has been done although there were some interviews, people supposed to turn up for work but failed and ..... I am sick & tired, we seems to be taken for granted and felt that our boss thinks we can cope even without recruting any. However, my immediate boss is very sincere and my colleagues are sad & persuaded me to stay on. What should I do? I am @ a loss now. HELP!!!!!!!!!

I would say leave. You are being taken advantage of with the extra workload and the company you are working for is saving money by not hiring a replacement for your colleague that left.

If the work environment is as bad as what you've described, then the only way your boss could have persuaded you to stay is i) because you really don't want to leave or ii) you may be lacking a little confidence in moving on. I think it happens to a lot of us at some stage in our working lives. We want to move on because we hate our jobs, or the people we work with, or the work itself - there's always something. But that place we complain so much about also has an air of familiarity and comfort - we know where we're going each day, what we'll be doing, that we'll get paid at the end of it all. Sometimes, taking that step to move on for whatever reason, is so hard because we're so used to the routine. All I can say is you need to do what's right for you right now. If you aren't up to moving on or if you really don't want to leave your current job, then stay. If you really truly have had enough and you are ready to try new things, then do it!!!! Those colleagues who are your true friends, will still be your friends after you leave!!!!! Good Luck!!!!!

Loyalty is a good thing, and employers appreciate that. When looking for another job, loyalty to a past employer reflects positively on you as an employee. Still, your company sounds like it is taking you and others for granted, and making no real efforts to lighten the workload for those directly affected by the loss of the ex-colleague. The only one who seems to care is your immediate boss, and he is not the one who runs the company. The bottom line is that companies will do what is in their best interests, without worrying too much how it will affect their employees. If you have been a loyal employee and have tried to make things work but it is just too difficult, then you should do what is best for you. After sacrificing for this company, your company could STILL lay you off down the road if it is in their best interests, so your loyalty and sacrifice would have been for nothing. You have to think of YOUR bottom dollar and bottom line, because your employer is thinking of theirs. Good luck!

ahh i had a similar dilemma but i chose to leave and prob the best decision for my sake so far.

Do what is right for you. Dont stay for the people (although it is hard coz you make good friends) but remember, people come and go and the work remains the same

If the conditions havent change and wont change, the only thing that will change is YOU. You will become bitter because you are travelling so far for a job you are unhappy to be in and a workload you wont be able to handle for much longer.

Sometimes change is good. Go for the new job and protect your sanity. God will watch over and guide you.

Good luck =)

One thing some companies are trying to do is allow employees to telecommute. Best Buy is one example of a company allowing--even encouraging--employees to get their work done wherever they want to.

Another, perhaps better alternative is for your boss to offer you enough of a raise that you can move closer to where you work.

It's basically a conversation you need to have with your boss. If you simply announce that you are leaving, it kind of shuts the door. If you and your employer are willing to make some compromises, you might find yourself much better off than you were before.

Best wishes!

do you have any fondness in the company?

despite the long travelling hours, are there any positive things in the company that can make you feel good or relaxed more? example, near to shopping area and canteen, nice toilets, comfortable working environment etc?

ps: you may not find the above in the other company.

If
1) It's not what where you want to work
2) the work conditions are substandard
3) the pay doesn't compensate for what you put up with
then i would look for another job.

Don't waste your time or health! In the end, nobody compensates you but yourself so do the thing that makes you feel good more of the time than the other. Run Baby!!
