a)
let the number beY
(60/100) Y = 48
(3/5)Y = 48
Y = 48 x 5/3 = 16 x 5 = 80
The number is 80.
b)
100% <---->48
175%<----> 175/100 x 48 = 7/ 4 x 48 = 7 x 12 = 84
c)
An examination mark of 50 out of 90 would give a % mark of 50/90 x 100 = 5/9 x 100 = 500/9 = 56% to the nearest %

a primer on percent
percent (%) means per 100
for example, 5% means 5 per 100 means 5/100 = 0.05
with this concept, we can ask the question
what percent is something (A) of something else (Y)?
recall percent is just the ratio of a number with 100 (that is "per 100"), so this question is asking us to compare two ratios.
x% = A/B
x/100 = A/B
notice there are three different numbers here (beside the 100):
x, A, and B.
now suppose you know only two of these, then you can ask
the question what is the third? there are three cases.
1) you know x and A. what is B?
x/100 = A/B, solve this for B we get
B = 100A/x
this can be asked this way:
A is x% of what number? this is like your first question
60% = 48/B
just solve this for B
B = 100*48/60 = 80
2) you know x and B, what is A?
x/100 = A/B, solve for A we get
A=B*x/100
or what is x% of B?
this is like your second question
what is 175% of 48
A = 48*175/100 = 84
100% of a number is that same number. more than 100% of a number is more than that number. less than 100% of a number is less than that number.
note in this case that we are asking for 175%, that is, more than 100%. our answer was 84, which as expected, is greater than 48.
3) you know A and B, what is x?
what percent of B is A? or what percent is A of B?
x/100 = A/B, solve for x
x = 100 * A/B
this is like your last question
what percent of 90 is 50?
x/100 = 50/90
x = 100 * 50/90 = 55.6
(so 50 is 55.6% of 90)

1)
60/100 * x= 48
0.6x = 48
x = 48/.6
x = 80
2)
1% of 48 = 0.48
175% of 48= 0.48 * 175
= 84
3)
x/100 * 90= 50
90x/100 = 50
90x =50*100
x = 5000/90
x = 55.56

1) keep that no as x
(60 /100 ) * x =48
x = (48 * 100) / 60
th no. is 80
2)
175% of 48
= (175 / 100) * 48
= 84
3)
let x% of 90 be 50
90 * ( x / 100) = 50
x= (50 * 100) / 90
=55.55 %

The answer is to change the form of your question:
48/X = 60/100
Factored out, X= 4800/60
Figure out the rest.
Good luck!
