Sounds like you are experiencing a Memory issue. Possibly your Ram is going bad...have it tested....if it is indeed going bad...replace it....Possibly a good time for an upgrade in the amount of RAM too...

reasons:
1. may be you have installed too many softwares
2. may be due to low virtual memory
3. may be ram is not suffiecient for the memory
4. may be your virus definitions are out of date and your system is affected by virus

solution:
1. first remove all the additional softwares on your computer or fomat it
2. though you have a large memory there is no enough ram so increase the capcity of the ram.
3. update your virus definitions periodically
4. increase the virtual memory by increasing the size of c drive
5. you have said that your dvd writer stops responding resulting in cd writing error this is because of low buffer or virtual memory

so try to do these things
your computer may function better
all the best

system hangs due to OS reasons!

or virus problems

the third reason could be too many start up processes!

i think this is the reason! if u installed too many softwares and during the software installation u may have selected 'run in start up'
this selection runs the software the minute u start the computer along with the OS files!

for this go to task bar click'properties'
goto cpu usage see that it is 2% or less when u r idle.
mov to processes..they should not be more than 50 processes!

also do this

delete as many desktop short cuts as possible

make sure that ur c drive is not full!

update ur virus scan

donot use animated wall paper..

i hope my ans satisfied u

i wish u all the best!!!!!

The quick fix is to usually upgrade your RAM to 1 GB. Just in case, you should run a virus and spyware check. If issues continue, take your computer to a service place.

what i think about your problem is that you may be having the following problems:
1).Disk errors-your hard disk must have got scratches and thats why takes a long time to read.this causes the system to hang.fFor this, run a disk check(right click the drive(s) and select tols tab).

2).memory issue-For this try to increase the virtual memory(right click My computer and then advanced option)

If the above solutions don't work then try replacing the Hard disk.

Uninstall any grafix files that abosrb u r RAM. Adjust ur CPU position b4 using DVD Drive. If u dropped ur CPU or if suddenly it recieved a jerk then adjust cords and chips inside CPU.

2), For monitor adjust ur Graphics card resolution. Try out reducing resolution with low graphics useage for other files.

I think it might be the heat sink problem. Check out all the heat sinks inside your CPU works fine, especially the one meant for the processor. If your CPU is getting over heated better fix some heat sinks if you have not..

may be you are not uninstalled the previous os properly, due to this registers are not cleared properly. if you formatted in quick format you should get this problem. to avoid slow proceessing go to run in that type "msconfig". on that window clear unwanted applications, like nero check, avg .
