The main reason why is because when you open your mouth you are stretching your face and the eyelashes are easier to reach and stay still when you are applying the mascara, even women who don't open their mouths tend to make a frowning face to stretch their faces enough.

LOL that's EXACTLY I have been wondering for years, I have never met a woman that does it with mouths closed... I'm a makeup artist and this is very funny for me, I asked several girls why do they do that and they didn't even know about it before I told them... After I asked them, everytime they put the mascara on, they were trying to close their mouth, but just the moment they lose focus on closing the mouth and they focus on the mascara the mouth opens again haha...
It's still a myth to me o_o

This actually has something to do with the muscles in your face. When you apply mascara as someone said earlier, the muscles in our jaw relax a bit because of the position and how we put mascara on. Thus we get this dumb, gaping mouth look to us while we do it. I don't think it has anything to do with stretching our faces because no matter if your mouth is opened or closed, there's the same amount of room between your eyelashes and eyelids as there was before.

I don't, my mouth is always closed when I'm doing my mascara so I don't really know.

because when u stretch ur eyes n open widely n look up its a natural reflex i guess.. :) n if u try top close ur mouth it wil distract u from applying the mascara properly :)

Not all women do that i don't my friends think I'm kinda because i can't but basically the reason is because it relaxes the muscle around the eyes for easier application

Not all of us do it. I don't. But, it helps widen the eyes so we can get the exact coverage of the lashes, and less of a possible mess.
