how do i even add it to my display picture options?

On the top, choose Tools. Scroll down to the last and click options.On The left,under Personal, check show my display pic and allow others to see it. A button on the right beside it show change picture. When u click it, there are 2 choices. Choose browse and look for the pic which u haf saved in ur computer. This shld do the trick.

Click on the picture you currently have, click browse and then choose the one you want

there is a faster way.
if you have added someone to your list that is.
1st, login to your msn.
double click on any one of your friend's email or nickname you see in your msn.
right-click on your default photo (blue in colour figure) and then click "change my display picture".
then, select your choice of photo.
