I have been searching in vain for DSL service for many months. Ive tried services such as Verizon and Earthlink, yet for some ungodly reason it isnt available in my area. My current internet provider is AOL and even they can't offer me anythingold dial-up. I have no idea why its like this. I'm hurting here, to download a five minute song it takes between 20-30 minutes. I live in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, its not like I';m in boonies or anything. Its looks as if cable internet and dial-up is the only two options. I'm in need of divine intervention.....

You need to find out when your Local exchange is being upgraded to be able to support DSL.
Have you considered a Cell Phone GPRS connection?
Your Service Provider will be able to supply you with a Wireless Card for your Terminal or laptop(GPRS is as fast if Not faster than DSL)

We just got DSL in our area last year and we live about 60 miles from Detroit. Sometimes it just takes time. Who is your local phone company? Ours is ATT and that is who we have our DSL through. I'm surprised you don't have DSL living just outside Pittsburgh, that's not exactly a small town. You could contact your cable company and see if they offer a DSL or Broadband service. Our local Comcast does, its expensive, but they do offer it.

Usually, to get DSL you must be within 17,000' of the Central Office or a repeater. The phone company has to make sure that their hardware will support DSL in your location also, and sometime they are extremely slow at doing the upgrade.
What is wrong with Cable Internet? I use it, and am extremely happy with my upload/download speeds.

DSL availability is based on several factors, but the most important is wiring quality and your distance from a central phone station. Your phone service may be patched from a station miles away. Ask your neighbors if they have high speed, usually cable internet is available.

Most likely, you're just too far away from a DSL server for the company to be able to give you their claimed performance rates, and therefore cannot provide the service to you.

The reason you do not qualify for DSL is probably because you are more than 18000 ft (wire) from the nearest DSLAM or CO....

Personally i am on a Cable Connection...it is better than dial-up....

I actually have Cable. i tried to acquire a very large setup report on Dial up which suggested it grow to be going to take 20 hours. when I were given cable and retried an similar report, it took 20 minutes. Which makes my cable almost 50x swifter than dial up.
