To start with they are a different size, they major difference in them, the RG6 is shielded better for your digital signals, in other words it keeps the signals shielded from each other, the main wire in the center carries the signal, and the braided wire is the ground and the wrapped foil keeps the signals separate,

You have a good handle on the difference between the two. They are both 75 Ohm coaxial cable. RG-6 has a larger center conductor. Well constructed RG-6 will have less loss per 100 meters than well constructed RG-59. I don't know about your local pricing, but RG-6 is typically a little more expensive. For most residential applications the difference in price should be pretty small. When you are a cable company and are wiring a few hundred thousand houses a year, the difference in price will probably outweigh the difference in performance.

Both RG-6 (.332" O.D.) and RG-59 (.242" O.D.)are 75 ohm impedance cable; RG-58 (.195" O.D.) is 75 ohm impedance cable.
The "right" cable is the one with the correct impedance match. If there is a different impedance requirement between two compnents, then an "impedance matching" transformer is needed.

no one uses rg-59 or 58 any more
the are limited in bandwidth ( in temrs of ghz ) of how much data they can carry which is why cable companty installers now use rg-6 and satellite r-g8
