I ran a search but it said D drive does not exist, is not detected

Sorry. It's an optical disk
This is also the 3rd time it has happened. When it happenend before I ended up having to reinstall windows and I lost everything

Open your computer and check to see if the power and IDE cables are still connected. Sometime they come lose. Or the cable itself might be damaged.. This happened to a friend of mines computer, and it was a faulty IDE cable.

Also, since you said it happened before. Check you IDE drivers.
Goto start, control panel, system(if shown, if not click classic view), device manager, then it should have some thing along the line of IDE controllers(depends on the computer). Then click on that to see if theres a problem with one of the drivers. If not, try updating the drivers. This could be your problem.

Your question is too general.
To get a worthwhile answer, please indicate what kind of disk this is:
1. Physical (hard)
2. Optical (CD, DVD, etc)
3. removable (ipod, mp3 player, usb-drive)

It'd also be good to indicate if you're using a desktop or notebook.
In all cases, check the connections. Something might have come loose.
Also, try and listen for the drive. Is it spinning/clicking? It could have "died," or need servicing.
