If you are an American and you have not traveled abroad? Then you really don't know why? Then you should go to www.history.com and they have the reasons listed? And or there is audio/visual as well for you to learn why?
Number one is hygenic reasons, the plumbing sucks overseas, they are over populated, not every little place like Switzerland, but it would get real boring there unless you are swiss, italian, or austrian, french or german? And you would really be surprised how segregational it is? #2 is Freedom is everything, freedom of race creed or color, is the variety of life, a place to expand your mind and get away from the isolationalist cultures! My God almighty who in the world wants the boring life of living amongst all the same type as yourself? I mean that is fine if you are from there and that is your heritage, but once you are born here and born free of choice it is a different culture and heritage, i would hate living in a Euro country or China Yuk? No room for dreams of anything new, We Americans are a miracle in itself and I for one am proud of the mix and match thing, and being inventive, and progressive, and friendly for the most part that we go on line and communicate with all and any. I am not prejudice but I would be if I lived in an all German, Italian, Chinese culture because I am an American. However I respect them for their culture there and in their communities here as well. and if you ask them they will tell you they feel the same way, they may keep traditional cultures from their heritage but they wouldn't trade Being an American for anything else not even to go to where their roots are from. It is a funny subject the Afro-Americans? They went to find their roots and still long to be back here in and be an American. Eh? So you go figure it out? it isn't hard to learn that we are the promised land and we will inevitably fight to the death for it as well!

America is the land of the free. To see some responses here, I get the feeling some Americans don't appreciate the freedoms they have the opportunity to enjoy. After 9/11 everything changed, and I would much rather get searched at the airport, have my conversation tapped, or questioned if it will prevent any future terror attack. If we are not ready to sacrifice at least a few freedoms, we will be doomed to experience more attacks.

In a word (or 8) The Constitution of the United States of America. This is the most inspired document ever written for governance. It clearly sets out rights and responsibilities and, unlike many such documents, can be amended only after a long examination of the amendments.
To think this was written more than 200 years ago is even more remarkable. This is why the American system is so successful.

We are the best but Americans are allowing its destruction by sacrificing a few rights at-a-time for a false, already proven, sense of security e.g. Homeland Security and the FBI's willing to terrorize how Californians voted for medical marijuana. The FBI should be considered a terrorist organization. Remember they had a dossier on Dr. martin Luther King,Jr! Anyone protesting big money and republicans such as George Walker Bush, Alberto R Gonzales, and all legal criminals get the attention of them. Right now they are enforcing 18 U.S.C. 2257 Why do they not go after people who declassify information to destroy political opponents? Are they scared of their bosses. I think Alberto R Gonzales's ties with ENRON would had landed him in jail as well as Dick Cheney and Halliburton! Well Power and Money speak and poor white folks are treated as bad as minorities.

this is an easy question to answer. 1. Because we have men and women who volunteer at least four years of their lives to defend the freedoms we so richly enjoy. Even if it means laying down their lives to ensure that YOUR freedoms endure. 2. Our position in world economics, simply put no other country's economy would survive with out the US. When's the last time you ever heard of the somalian stock market doing great, oh yeah they don't have much of an economy.

Please, have you BEEN to other countries?
I was in Colombia, could not go anywhere with out a body guard...and that country is beautiful!
I've been to Italy, again a great country and great people, but have you seen their homes?
I've been to Germany, have you driven on their roads?
I've been to France, gorgeous people but would it kill them to bathe?
I've been to England, again great people but could you be any more cramped?
I have been to Russia, the people are the most hospitable of all, but have you eaten their food?
I shall I go on? Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Canada.......
Freedom is only one reason we are arrogant but sometimes it takes the little things to appreciate home, and for Americans the US is home.
Do you love the country you are in? Have you even been to America?

Try not paying taxes and find out real fast who your house really belongs too.
you need the government permission to get married? what? is that freedom?
your children can be taken away from you. is that freedom?
Wake up! you are not FREE.
