it would depend on what part of the fault and how "Bad"

no the bay area would not break off, it is a north south sliding fault. the east part of th fault is sliding south, the west side of he fault is moving north.

Currently I understand there is about 12 inches of displacement in some sections of the fault, meaning if a major earth quake caused the ground to move every thing on the fault will shift up to a foot from its current location.

so Don't start buying a life preserver yet... the bay area won't sink in to the ocean for a few million years.

eventually however baja California will be where San Fransisco is today. But like I said, in a few million years.

How ever! if the Hayward fault and the San Andreas fault both decided to shift at the same time, Bye Bye San Jose, south bay, east bay and San Fran.

Split apart for the continent? Yeah, right...jeez, that's just a myth. The portion of the state west of the fault is moving north; it is not moving away from the rest of the state. In other words, CA will NEVER fall into the ocean. The only thing that would happen is that Los Angeles and SoCal would slide northward and end up a bit closer to San Francisco. The San Andreas is more of a "2 halves sliding past each other" type of movement more than it is a "2 halves moving away from each other" type of movement. Google the following, and you'll understand what I mean:

Transform Plate Boundary
Divergent Plate Boundary

I remember watching the first Superman Movie a long time ago.

Lex had a diabolical plan to sink California. The West coast is called Cascadia and runs along the rockies ... between the mountains and the Pacific.Eventually the plates will do something. Snap! California breaks off, and Washing ton and Oregon and British Columbia and the Alaskan Panhandle.

I have never forgotten the map of the West Coast .... along the rockies.

I think you should have a boat nearby. Just a thought. and a few supplies.

Of course the big guy made it all ok.

And then I moved to this part of the world. Go figger!

California is big place. It would depend on where the quake was and what kind. There are variety of kinds of quakes, some much damaging than others. It is so ignorant to talk about CA falling off into the sea. California is not sitting at the top of an undersea cliff. In fact the drop off is quite gentle when you consider the lateral distance. It is possible for there to be landslides but they would be much smaller than the state falling into the sea. I think some of this falling into the sea comes from some jealousy and envy.

EVIDENTLY WE DO NT KNOW WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN TO MARROW BUT LETS LOOK AT SOME STATISTIC THEY SAY THE SAN ADREA'S FAULT RUNS RIGHT ALONG THE BORDERS OF CALIFORNIA AND IT IS THE LARGEST FAULT LINE IN THE UNITED STATES WITCH SITS BETWEEN HUGE CREATORS THAT IF TH EASE CREATORS WERE TO REACH A 6.0 0R EVEN 5.6 ON A CONTINUOUS SHIFTING COULD CAUSE A GREAT DEVASTATION FOR CALIFORNIA S " 5.6 ON RIC TA SCALE SO YES ITS POSSIBLE FOR CA TO BREAK OFF AND SINK OVER LONG PERIOD OF TIME I DON'T THINK IT WOULD SINK VERY QUICKLY IT MIGHT HOLD FLOAT

Bush will spend 20 billion dollars for disaster relief. California will see $19.42 of it. Nevada would be filled with vacant mobile homes and trailor homes. Multibillion dollars will win no bid contracts, which they would subcontract it to a company who would subcontract it to another company who hires undocumented workers. The conservatives would be happy that the earthquake ould reduce illegal immigration problems. The liberals will point fingers saying it could be prevented if we had better infrastructure and attempt to shed crocodile tears. I would be screaming, we should have listen to my fish. They were freaking out the night before and the moon looked huge.

There has been a lot of hype about Calf. falling off into the ocean, but it is extremely unlikely. Tremendous damage, fires, explosion from gas lines rupturing, building crumble, etc. But no, I don't think CA would just - - sail away.

Not to worry. Get on with life. There are fault lines all over the earth. Who know when one will hit and where.

Don't worry. Be happy.

Since California's plates can move any second which would probably cause a massive earthquake then maybe a giant tsunami may take place we may be just a land of water.

Only part of California would crumble and fall into the sea. Where I live in Cali? New beachside property.
