Wolf Creek was marketed as being "based on true events" in the same way that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was. Both films are actually fiction but were partly inspired by real life murderers who operated in a similar manner.

Although not based on any single event, the actions of Mick in Wolf Creek are reminiscent of some infamous Australian murderers. In both stabbing Liz in the spine and shooting Kirsty at point-blank range in the head with the rifle, Mick was operating under a similar modus operandi to New South Wales serial killer Ivan Milat. Milat was responsible for murdering several backpackers who had been hitchhiking. In addition, convicted Northern Territory murderer Bradley John Murdoch also abducted British tourist Peter Falconio in circumstances similar to those portrayed in the movie.

Wolf Creek is set in a real location; however, the actual meteorite crater location is called "Wolfe Creek", and is located in northern Western Australia. It is believed to be the second largest meteorite crater in the world. The movie was almost entirely filmed in South Australia, so most of the shots in the movie at "Wolf Creek" are not located at the real "Wolfe Creek". The aerial shots of the crater in the movie show the genuine Wolfe Creek crater.

Wolf Creek The Real Story

In the "original" version of Little Red Riding Hood, the story is about a girl "maturing" and being seduced by the wolf. It was a lesson for the more promiscuous girls at that time. However, as the years pass, the story became significantly altered. Even the most popular version from the Brothers Grimm has been altered for children. Wikipedia: "...It has been noted that in these stories she escapes with no help from any male or older female figure, but instead utilizes her own cunning. The woodcutter/huntsman figure, added later, would limit the girl to a relatively passive role. This has led to criticisms that the story was changed to keep women "in their place", needing the help of a physically superior man such as the woodcutter to save them."

Wolf Creek, the true story (yeah, right) behind the murder in the Australian Outback that inspired the Wolf Creek movie.
