You have some bad info here. Modern dogs evolved from domesticated wolves. The domestic dog (Chihuahua to Irish wolfhound) are all Canis familiarus. They are ALL Canids. Wolves are generally referred to as Canis lupus. There are actually three species of wolves worldwide. It can be divided down further than that with the different subspecies of wolf. Someone was kind enough to do that above. Red wolf is Canis rufus. Mexican Grey Wolf is Canis lupus baileyi.
Technically dogs and wolves are different species, however most large domestic dogs can interbreed with wolves and produce viable offspring. This, by some definitions, would indicate that they are the same species. Science generally agree that wolves and dogs are NOT the same species

Dogs and Wolves belong to the family Canidae.
Wolves may be described as lupine, but their genus name is Canis (ex. Red Wolf - Canis rufus; Gray Wolf - Canis lupus (see where lupine comes from))

Yes, and dogs belong to the wolf family; both Canis lupus. Go here.

PS The first answer was wrong. The family of both wolf and dog is Canadae. Wolves have sub species, too. For instance; Canis lupus arctos ( arctic wolf ) and occidentalis ( Rocky Mountain wolf ).

The other way around. Dogs are descended from domesticated wolves.
Wolf is canis lupus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf
Dog is canis lupus familiaris, listed as a subspecies of wolf. That's one reason many dogs howl at night.
