And all of a sudden iTunes said that my iPod appears to be corrupt... yet this has never happened before? what do i do? Can I shut it off? any ideas?

I would try to reset it if you can, by holding the middle button and the menu button until it shuts off. It won't erase anything and basically it is just shutting off and restarting. ,
If that doesn't work you may have to reformat your ipod, I did that to my friends ipod once before and I was able to also get a lot of his old songs back, but I can't remember exactly what I did, it might've been because I have tune transfer.
If the idea of losing your stuff (you don't have it saved anywhere else) doesn't go well with you, set up an appointment at the apple store, and they can fix it for you.

Don't worry about it, the same thing happened to me. Unplug the IPod and let the battery drain (go completely dead and shut off), then plug it back up to the computer and it will start working again, good as brand new.

this has happened to me many times. you can reset manually or restore it on itunes. in the ipod section on the source list there should be an option for you to restore it. if you have any other ipod problems the ipod help page on apple.com is usually very helpful.
