cingular is going to be the best overall carrier especially now that they are fully with at&t you can call 100 million subscribers as if its mobile to mobile rollover minutes and there data speeds are the fastest overall and in the future they will be the best especially now plus they just bought the 3 yr. exclusive on the iphone and the first model is set to release in early may. No other choice CINGULAR

Hate to bust your noodle but Sprint has the worst customer service and I am a Sprint user too. lol Cingular has better customer service and rated #1 according to J.D. Powers Surveys. Personally I would look at getting a Cricket Phone if you are using it mostly for local service. In Texas, $37 gets you UNLIMITED Minutes, text messaging, and free long distance, 3 way calling, call forwarding, and caller ID. And the biggie. NO contract. When I finish my Sprint contract I am changing over. But you would have to google the phone company cricket to see their coverage in LA. Just googled, and no cricket in LA.
Anyway, if you have problem with one company on coverage you may have problems with the others. Just google the companies and make sure that your area is covered or which one may cover it best.

Your best bet is Verizon Wireless. In your area all kinds of features are open for your perogative. They have the largest coverage area in the United States. Cingular claims to have the fewest dropped calls, but it isn't true. If you read the fine print, it was based on a survey by customers within major city areas. That means squat for rural and suburb areas. Verizon also offers FIOS in California areas, which is fiber optics for television, internet, phone lines, you name it. Its pretty cheap too. So you could get phone service and FIOS in a bundle if you wanted. Fiber Optics are one of the fastest ways to send information, and the phone service has the best coverage. Go with VZW.
