It got downgraded just like people from a job. Astro physicists thought that they would fire the planet Pluto and downgrade it to a non planet.

On October 14, 2006, the IAC downgraded Pluto from a Planet to a Dwarf planet due to the change of definition of planet and the unqualified status of Pluto. It is dumb to say that pluto had died. It is still there and ever will be, unless there would be a astronomical event which may be spectacular in the future involving Pluto,

Kyle got it, but forgot to say why pluto was excluded under the terms of the new rules:
1. A planet has to orbit the sun
2. A planet has to be a sphere
3. A plantet can't have too much stuff interphereing with it's orbit
That's the simplified version. The real version is this:
1. is in orbit around the Sun;
2. has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape; and
3. has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit
Hope this helped.

It got downgraded to a "dwarf planet". Now the three dwarf planets in the solar system are Ceres, Eris, and Pluto.
