I have seen many that are P4 512MB over 2 GHZ and have at least 60 GB harddrives for right around 300 secondhand. The RAM can later be upgraded to even 2 GB and an external harddrive can be used if needed for storage. I have an older P4 1.8 GHZ machine running XP Pro with only 256 MB RAM and all applications run very fast. I do not use this for games or other graphics intense programs anyway.

I will go to Vista when the first service pack is released and they work out any bugs in the new upgrade software. Initial cost of the machine should be under $300 but I am willing to spend more later to upgrade. What make and model is the best for this? In other words, value and quailty hardware.

For under 300 you won't get anything new...try a Compaq but it's cheaper to just buy a 1024 mb memory and a 250 gb hard-drive now and save the hassle. Vista Premium won't run smooth with out it and to get basic is buying junk.

So, buy a better computer now fot slightly more..like $375-425 and get a good machine...forget vista basic too.

For microsoft to return out with an place of work 2007 and vista being the main cutting-edge domicile windows working device, it is going to be waiting to run. Atleast that's what i think of. wish it incredibly works out.

You're trying to predict the future. Do you want to buy a machine now, that you plan to later install an OS that requires it's features, at a later date? Why not wait till the OS "comes of age"? Then the machine required will be cheaper.
