First of all you absolutely cannot smoke, eat, or drink in your car. Doing any of those almost guarantees a stinky ride.

Use heavy duty solid rubber floor mats. These will catch most of what you track in from outside, keeping it out of your carpet.

Vacuum at least once a week, more often if you live in dusty areas. Don't forget the seats.

Keep surfaces free from dust with a warm damp washcloth. Avoid using products like Armor All, they tend to attract more dust and odor, and after repeated use will eventually pull the dye out of your plastic.

When using heat or AC keep the windows cracked just a touch and the fresh air vent open.

Change your cabin air filter if you have one.

Never keep garbage in your car.

If you use febreeze make sure your windows are down and there is some air movement in the car.

Finally take your car to a reputable auto detailer once or twice a year to have your carpet and seats steam cleaned. Most shops pull the seats out to do a very thorough cleaning. Expect to pay anywhere between $60 and $100 for the interior, and up to about $220 for a complete detail.

definitely dont smoke in the car. car freshners are a good way to go. vacuum the interior often and try not have things that have strong scents in the car (such as onions, fast food, etc.) sometimes it doesnt hurt to keep the windows cracked for air to come through, even if its below zero outside.

i have a friend who works at mcdonalds and he works there for about 6 hrs a day 5 days a week.. he bought a cobalt about 5 weeks ago and already it smells like a giant quarter pounder meal.. so clean clothes is always a plus too along with never having body odor.
