My thumb and around that area have been hurting, also my wraist has too. My mom just said I probably sprained it and that there's noting the ER can do for it. I was wondering if it can be sprained its not really swollen, I cant really tell if its brusing and it hurts really bad like a 8 on a scale from 1-10. When I put weight on it, it also hurts. Can it be sprained? Should I go to the doctor?

Considering that it is not swollen, then it could just be a sprain. Signs of a fractured bone are: swelling, redness, bruising that doesn't go away for weeks, pain that lasts for weeks. In general, a sprain will heal much faster than a fracture. A fracture or break will have lasting pain for 4 weeks or more, along with bruising. And your mom is wrong...the ER can do an x-ray to see if the wrist is actually sprained or broken. So, it's up to you and your mom, it doesn't sound very serious to me. You can wait until tomorrow to go to the doctor if it still hurts or gets swollen. In the meantime, as a precaution, find a padded splint and lay your hand on the splint with your palm side laying on the splint and your fingers curved around the end (it should feel natural and comfortable). The splint should be long enough to cover the length from your hand to halfway to your elbow and its width should be almost the same size as your lower arm (just a little bit wider). Then, wrap a gauze around the splint and your hand and arm. It should be tight enough to hold your wrist and arm in place, but not too tight to cut off your circulation. This splint will keep all the bones in place to prevent further damage. You can also put ice on the part that hurts for up to 15 minutes...not any longer or you could damage the tissue. If you have nothing to make a splint, then you can make a pillow splint by wrapping it around your hand and arm (with the fingers curved around the end) and securing the pillow tightly. Do Not just wrap your hand in gauze without a hard splint or pillow splint under it. There is not support of the bones with that and may cause further damage. Take a few Ibuprofen to help with the pain.

Any pain that cannot be explained needs investigation. If a little fomentation (hot water bag or a thermal pad) or cold application doesn't relieve it, a visit to a doctor is probably needed.

I am not recommending alternative treatments since you are in a postion to go to a qualified doctor.
