Look at surfactants. They are used to break the hydrogen bonds in H20. They tend to stick together forming bubbles to keep the hydrophobic heads (water loving) and hydrophobic tails (water hating) away from each other. Thus the round shape to keep the water hating parts out out the water.

Because circles and spheres are the only shapes that distribute weight and stress equally around the whole shape. Any other would find the weakest point and break.
