The Soviet Union no longer exists as a country, so it cannot be either rich or a superpower.

Before the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, however, it was a superpower, but in a military sense not an economic one. As a military superpower, the Soviet Union controlled close to half of the world's entire arsenal of nuclear weapons (with the United States controlling the other near half, and Israel and a couple of other nations having a few of their own as well). It also had political control over a failry large portion of Europe, as well as influence over nations in Asia, Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean.

As a economic power, however, the Soviet Union was never a rich country. The average yearly income for a Soviet citizen was far less than that for an average citizen of most other European nations.

The Soviet Union was a bunch of countries in
northern asia that formed a communist block.
They were technically different countries
but were completely controlled by the Kremlin,
which currently only controls Russia.

Then in the late 80s and early 90s, communism
disintigrated, as did the control that the Kremlin
had over all of these other countries. The
"union" ceased to exist.

Prior to the fall of communism, the block of
countries was easily the second most powerful
political entity on the planet.

After the fall, the most powerful of them (Russia)
has nowhere near the political or economic clout
necessary to be a superpower. Certainly China
has more economic and politcal heft ... as does
the European Union (which didn't exist when
the USSR did).

They were a superpower, but no longer. Now, the
US is considered the only superpower although
I believe China is getting to be.

i remember a article by a group of military leaders on Russia and the Cold War.

here's the basics.

In 1985-86 during what we called the major 80's arms race Reagen and the Soviets went to extremes to upgrade, and build up their militaries.
(listen to Wild Wild West by Escape club and you'll notice its all about that).

but

it was all an ilusion

In 1962 the Cuban Missile Crisis happened.
Russia wanted to go to war over it. Rather or not it would have gone nuclear no one is sure about, but Russia really did want to protect their interests in Cuba.

In the 80's Russia invaded Afghanistan, and whiel they did nearly everything but exterminate the entire population, they were unable to keep the war going. Which added to the rebel movement against them.

These are just a few examples of things that did and could have gone wrong.

The soviet Union had a plan for invading NATO.

but you know what kept them from ever succeeding anywhere?

not the U.S.

MONEY

Russia could not afford the day to day costs of fighting a major war. Thats all it came down to.

There is no soviet union. The soviet union has been dissolved.

Russia, often confused with the former Soviet Union, is not a rich country.

The former Soviet Union was a superpower because of military might and dominance over its satellite states, but it was never rich.

The US is a superpower because of military might and economic dominance over its satellite states. We will not be rich forever.

It was a Power thing, not a money thing. Now the United States Of Soviet Russia are disbanded. I don't quite understand it myself, but I believe they are not only a non-power threat ( disbanding was end to nuclear weapons, army, KGB etc.,) but as individual states, they are very very money poor. Their political atmosphere has changed abruptly.
