I don't need to tell you that the last poster didn't have a clue what he was talking about. Here is a serious answer:

1. We recently had come to the brink of war with France over the XYZ Affair. John Adams felt war would be disasterous for the country so he would not lead America into war with France. Many Federalists were furious with Adams for not attacking the country they hated (and Jefferson loved) so passionately.

2. Also there were some problems with England that had not been resolved by the weak Jay Treaty. These issues still needed resolutions.

3. Was Jefferson the right man for the job of President? Would he lead the country down a path of agrarianism rather than the Federalist Adam's plans to continue Hamilton's plans for a buisness-based economy.

And those were really the main topics discussed that fall of 1800. And there you go.

~Only one issue: Tommy Jefferson wanted more votes than Jack Adams got. It was a good issue, as it turned out, because Tommy got more. Jack got his revenge. Quincey came alone a few years later. Georgie the Elder and Georgie the Younger aren't the first nepotistic tag team in presidential politics, even without the Roosevelt cousins.
