AMITYVILLE HORROR could be a scary movie. If you check the answers given to you or any question of similar kind, ( I remember answering one like yours) you will find that often people think that the movies with the scenes of people being brutally murdered and with corpses and blood all around are scary. NO. THEY ARE NOT.
A horror movie could be without a single death scene. It should scare you. That is the only objective of a scary movie. Blood and corpses make you puke…they don’t scare you.
Check out my list….
JEEPERS CREEPERS – II – A masterpiece directed by talented VICTOR SALVA. – A must see.
PREDATOR – II, * ing DANNY GLOVER.
WHAT LIES BENEATH.
You might laugh, but ROBOCOP scared me a lot. I mean it.
SIGNS.
Regards,
M.

In my opinion:
Currently, The Exorcist.
I haven't seen Audition yet, though. It's a Japanese horror film.
The final scene of Burnt Offerings is also pretty intense.

I think that's a matter of opinion. What about:
The Exorcist.
Jaws.
Halloween.
Friday the 13th.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
There's a lot of good scary movies.
