Not true. The Baja California desert runs along the Sea of Cortes, in Mexico. There is no relationship whatsoever between rain and distance from the sea.

It doesn't rain in the desert because not enough humidity forms in the air, as the atmosphere is very dry.

The key reason why a desert gets very little rain is evotranspiration.

"Evapotranspiration is the combination of water loss through atmospheric evaporation, coupled with the evaporative loss of water through the life processes of plants. Potential evapotranspiration, then, is the amount of water that could evaporate in any given region. Tucson, Arizona receives about 300 millimeters, (12 inches), of rain per year, however about 2500 millimeters, (100 inches), of water could evaporate over the course of a year. In other words, about 8 times more water could evaporate from the region than actually falls. Rates of evapotranspiration in other regions such as Alaska are much lower, "

The usual definition of a desert is a place that receives less than 250mm (10 inches) or precipitation a year. Deserts can be vast areas of sand but also savannah, tundra, permafrost, the ice-caps etc.

If a place did receive significant rainfall it wouldn't be a desert so by definition there has to be little rainfall in a desert.

A good observation but it's not quite true to say it doesn't rain in a desert although there is significantly less rain than elsewhere. Many desert areas are subject to short lived but intense rainfall that can cause localised flooding and temporary rivers and creeks.

The reason some places receive less rain than others is complicated (the dynamics of weather are).

Mositure enters the atmosphere via evapouration from the seas and oceans, the further inland somehwere is the less liklihood of it raining.

Also, there are wind patterns around the world which can result in predominantly cold, warm, dry or wet air. As a result there is an uneven distribution of heat and wetness - some places are warmer, drier, wetter or colder than others. Roughly winds blow away from the equator and the polar regions and meet somewhere in the middle.

High mountains force the air mass upwards, this cools it down and results in high rainfall on the summits and windward sides of the mountains. Beyond the mountains, in the leeward side, the air is much drier and rainfall is less.

There are other factors and any one, or combination of factors, can lead to an area receiving little annual rainfall and so qualifying for the title of desert.

Rain involves the water cycle.

You must have water (to evaporate) to have rain. There is no vast amounts water in the desert.

There is alot of water in the air. But the desert air never gets saturated with enough humidity to rain alot or for long amounts of time.

It does rain in the desert. Some of the heaviest downpours I have ever seen were in the desert. Little known: Antarctica is a desert. It seldom snows but what little falls does not melt.

It is further from the ocean. To rain water needs to evaporate into the air and then it is released back as rain. Since the desert is further from the ocean, it rains less. That would be my guess.
