My husband is from India, and he proposed to me with an egagement ring....down on one knee and said the most beautiful things. It was just him and I- simply beautiful. We didn't have an "Indian" engagement. :) Then again, he is one special guy... he never much let society / traditions lead him- he always was led by his heart.

Engagement is kind of dress rehearsal and necessary for any marriage. There are 2 kinds of marriages in India. “ Arranged Marriage” or “ Love Marriage “.

Well there are many people who try to be more modern and they feel shy accepting that they are doing “ Arranged Marriage”, so they say “ Arranged Love Marriage”

Whatever is the kind of marriage, engagement is always there and there are different rituals based on the location ( the state and province where bride and groom reside ).

Couples in love try to get their affair regularised by securing their parents' approval. Mostly it is accorded if there is not too much disparity.
This becomes very difficult if only one party is Muslim. Then, the couple have to elope & marry .
