I recently contacted an old teacher of mine after twenty-seven years.

I babysat for her two kids back in 1980 and I contacted her because I wanted to ask her if I could use her as a reference or at least have a letter of recommedation because I want to get into babysitting part time.

On January 23rd I wrote and sent her a letter. I told her who I was (I have since married and moved), that I was interested in working in babysitting, and politely asked her if I could use her as a reference or have a letter of recommendation. I included my address and phone number.

I never received a response of any kind.

In your opinion, why would she not respond at all; not even to decline?? If something like this happened to you, can you tell me what you think happened here?

Thanks. :)

The address I wrote to her is her current address.

I will report as abuse any rude answers like the one from "damienmob".

I wouldn't take it personally that she didn't respond. The mail system is known for loosing letters. If you want, why not find her phone number and give her a call? I'm sure there are other people in your life that would give you a good reference, maybe better than your old teacher ever could!

Come to think of it, what use would a 27 year old reference be today??? None. You've changed. A reference should be current to give an accurate description of how you work.

There could be a lot of reasons she did not respond. Perhaps she is sick and unable to communicate with you. Perhaps her life has taken turns to make her depressed. It is hard to know what is happening with sooen after all those years. Yes, you said her address is correct, but what if she passed away and relatives...sons or daughters are living there instead. In a nursing home...or simply not there. It also is important to remember a reference needs to be current...one that is all those years ago really wouldnt do you any good anyway. Try asking for references from friends and family...whose kids you have watched instead. And lastly, just maybe she just does not want to be bothered or even remember you.

The fact that she didn't respond, there may different reasons. Maybe she moved or she's sick. Maybe if you had a phone number and try to call her you might have better luck. I don't see no reason for her not answering your letter. And if you were on good terms with her, then it shouldn't be a problem. Try getting a phone number see if you'll have better luck.Good luck

Try again. This time, address your letter to the family of.
If you do not get a response, try the phone.
There could be several reasons why she does not respond, none of which would be because she does not want to.
If this is that important, keep trying until someone tells you why she is not responding, or why she wont.

It has been 27 years and she may not remember you. She may be busy, ill, it could be alot of things. Since you have her number, try and call her. She may not live there anymore. It takes longer for a letter to return when it is delivered to the wrong adress. Don't try to read too much into it.

She could be sick, or passed away. You could always try the school where she taught and ask if their is any info on her. As far as references ask anyone to write you one that knows you well.
