I was 18 when I got pregnant with my first (19 when he was born) and went into premature labor at 28 weeks (contractions and dialation stopped after medicine and bedrest), again at 29 weeks (with the same medicine and bedrest), and he was born at 31 weeks. The doctors were unable to figure out why I kept going into labor. Now that I'm pregnant again at 25 (the baby will be born when I'm 26), my doctor wants to make sure this one makes it past 32 weeks, at least. He's having me go on bedrest at 24 weeks, so I'll have restricted movement for close to half the pregnancy. My question is would my age make a difference in having a premature baby? Now that I'm older, would my body be more capable of going full term? Also, has anyone had a premature birth with one child (that the doctors couldn't figure out the reason why) and then had a full term baby afterwards? I'm hoping for the best but I'm afraid of the worst.

many many things can cause premature birth, some that could be repeated (incompetent cervix, other structural details), some that aren't likely to repeat themselves (undetected infection). I don't think you're age last time (18 &19) would be a factor. It's not that young, you were fully developed and likely done with puberty. Just keep hoping for the best and keep talking to your doctor. Are you classified as high-risk? Do you have a perinatologist?

My first baby/son was born premature and I was 32! I was not at risk for premature birth. He was due in Sept. and born in July. He weighed 3 lbs when he was born. My water broke the end of June and was in the hospital with my hips elevated for about a week before they did an emergency c-section. I started having too many braxton hicks contractions with my second child/son and started seeing a specialist. I still made a number of trips to the labor and delivery worried when I was having too many contractions. Finally they gave me Tributilin pills. I took them until I was 36 weeks and then the doc said I could stop. Within about 24 hours my water broke. My second child weighed 7 lbs.

I wish you all the best. I'm sure things will turn out better since everyone's aware of what happened before.

I havent had any kids yet, but I do know a girl that had her first 2 babies rediculesly early. Her third baby came at the right time. Her doctor told her that she had a incompitant cervix, and wouldnt carry till term. She never took care of herself with any of her pregnancies, she smoked and drank coffee to much. She was young when she had her first 2, and in her 20s when she had the last one. Maybe you will have no problems going till term. Good Luck, and try to stay positive about the doctors orders.

I gave birth to my son when I was 24 weeks pregnant...he weighed 1lb 12oz (I was 23 at the time). I had no idea I was in labor until it was too late. He is now 13 years old. 5 years later I became pregnant with my daughter, and since they had no idea what had sent me into premature labor the first time, they had me on bed rest at 24 weeks with my second pregnancy, as well. I am proud to say that with several rounds of mag sulfate and lots of brethine, I made it to 36 weeks! My daughter is now 8 years old. I would say listen to your doctor...(hopefully) you chose this person because you trust them!

I was born premature (I am 34) when I was born, and I was so small you could hold me with one hand. My mother had a history of problems during pregnancy, and my sister was also born premature. You might want to check you family history, or the father's family history and find out if it is hereditary. I may think it is but I may be wrong. But check with your doctor as well, and ask him about it.

Your body is mature enough at 19 to handle a pregnancy. You should ask your doctor about other conditions that cause pre-mature labor. Definately stick to your bed rest though.

Age may have something to do with it but I'm not sure. Just go on bed rest like the Dr. said and try not to worry. Your Dr. should know best...that's what you pay him for, right?
