I went to Ebay for the first time tonight, and my internet security app. gave me a warning that the sight was very dangerous(phishing). I did not register because of the warning, and it did seem a little strange to me that I should give credit card info. in order to sell items. Was I on the real Ebay? If you sell on Ebay, please let me know what is involved.

Yes, you have to register with a credit card to sell on eBay.

Make sure you go there directly, do not use a link.

I've been on eBay for YEARS... and as long as you can spot the many hacker emails you will get from jerkwads with too much time on their hands, you'll be fine.

When I used to purchase off eBay I was really careful about the sellers I would buy from - I always checked the feedback to ensure the seller had good ratings from a number of customers.

And yet I was still almost the victim of theft. Someone, who I believe to be one of the people I purchased from, tried to steal my account. eBay sent me an email about it, requesting that I verify my identity. I thought that was phishing, but I contacted eBay and was told it was not. Rather than go ahead and send them the requested info I instead asked eBay to close the account. It's been years and I have never used eBay again.

I've never had a problem and have bought maybe 4 things or so from ebay.

BUT

Just realize that it is quite a lot like buying from some guy in a trenchcoat on the corner. Read the testamonials and stick to the ones who have realistic sounding responses about their service. Avoid the bad ones.

NEVER EVER EVER register for something through your email address. Always type www.ebay.com to go to ebay. Many many scammers send emails that look like they are from Ebay. I never ever go to Ebay from my email account. I always retype it back into my address window. Be cautious. However, I LOVE ebay. I've bought and sold for years and not had any trouble with phishing (because I do as mentioned above). Best of luck to you.

Like the others have said, don't use a link, type the address in yourself (http://www.ebay.com).

And in order to sell you DO have to register with a credit card ... I guess so they know they'll get paid their fees, etc.

But when you get to the page to enter your card info, look at the URL ... MAKE SURE it begins with https. The S means it's secure.

The reason you have to put in credit card number is so you can buy stuff using paypal on the internet and whatever you sell goes into your paypal. You can trust it! It won't do anything to your cpu and no one will take ur number.
