I put 100 watt light bulbs in my bathroom (3) but it is smelling like something is burning. I turned off the light. Does this mean I should get a lower watt bulb ? Will it be okay to change the bulb once the light cools off ?

You probably overloaded the fixture. The bulbs are putting off to much heat, and if left on for to long could start a fire. There should be a tag inside the fixture that tells you the maximum allowable wattage for bulbs. Most fixtures I've seen have a max of 60 watts. Let it cool down and put in lower watt bulbs.

A lot of fittings have a 60 Watt max so it's likely the housing or shade that's overheating - use a lower watt bulb, just wait for the one that's in to cool down first.

Your first responder is Correct, yes you should put in lower wattage bulbs and you should wait till they cool to do so. Somewhere on the fixture there should be instructions on what size is the correct wattage bulbs to use. If the fixture still smells like it is burning turn it off and call an electrician to check it out.
