DVD burners have the capability to Copy the contents (without downloading on to your computer) and then you can insert a new DVD to write it.

use dvddecrypter to 'rip' the movie to the hard drive. then use a simple program called autoGK (autogordianknot) to convert the dvd to a much smaller size ( say 700 MB)

both programs are free and available on the web, and autogk is very easy to use. very easy.

but note: under the DMCA, breaking the copy-protection on a dvd disk (called css) is illegal under US law. just fyi ;)

You can rip the video with a lot of tools. The most popular is DVDDecrypter. You can get it free from here: http://seamonkey420.tech-recipes.com/other/misc/SetupDVDDecrypter_3.5.4.0.exe

Also, if you have a copy-protected DVD, you can disable it temporarily while you rip it with DVD43, which you can get here: http://download.copybase.ch/dvd43/DVD43_3-9-0_Setup.exe
