My best friend all through highschool and after jest had a snowmobile stolen and told the police that i might have done it. I have a sled of my own why would i want his? After several trips to the police station and being hand cuffed to a table i was found innocent. The police told him that i was no longer a suspect and if he knew of anyone else to let them know. He then told everybody in town that i was me. I live in a small town and everyone knows everyone. I have asked to stop and he ignores me. I have been told to sue for slander. Do I?

Your best friend doesn't sound like much of a friend. You could just forgive and forget, but you live in a small town, endured being handcuffed and embarrassed, and now he is telling everyone in town that you did something that he KNOWS you have been proven innocent of doing. What he is doing is attacking your character in a malicious way. You have every right to sue him. I would check with your local courthouse and see if they have a free legal referral service. Or you could check with the small claims court and just ask if a person can be sued for character assassination. This guy hurt you for no good reason. He is continuing to do so. You could be ostracised, denied employment and basic services if you live in a small town and everyone thinks you are a thief. I would definately consider suing the guy. It won't undo the damage, but it would likely restore your reputation and teach the guy that what he did was very wrong. Good luck.

As a retired attorney - how can you sue him for slander if he never slandered you? If you went to jail or court or whatever, you went as a possible accused or a suspect. If you were found innocent - you were released. He harmed you in no way at all You were simply inconvenienced in accordance with the law. If you "might have done it" then you do not have a good reputation among your friends. You are not old enough to have a professional reputation slandered. Possible accusation of theft is not slander. It is not even close to Libel.

If its a very small town simply ask him to stop and point out to other people that the police dont consider you a suspect.

Ask him also why he thinks you stole it and suggest that you will sue if he continues.

If he keeps up the sue him .

Feminists you comprehend those posters weren't paintings, you purely do not prefer to confess it. i ask your self what number feminists may comply with have artwork in courthouses of prostitutes less than the impact of alcohol and overwhelmed up, or perhaps murdered with the caption "they knew the way of existence, they were asking for it". that's academic acceptable? nicely lynn, i'm a guy, and not in any respect a spouse-beater, and wager what, that spoke volumes of an anti-male body of innovations in that courthouse. became there one poster that had a lady as a wrongdoer of dv? possibly if there have been one, there's a controversy. that is observed as equality. yet feminists equality is woman superiority isn't it? geoffgilsey--that's the problem with attorneys--put it in plain English!! You have to have a monetary loss to win your suit (courts are about substantiated $$ loss). Unless what this other person has said has affected you financially, you have no case. There is no attorney in this land that will take your case unless you are willing to cough up the hundreds of $$ to prosecute. Unless what this person said destroyed your business and you can prove it AND you are not a public official, you have no case.

It sounds more like gossip than slander. I would just ignore it and people will probably forget about it eventually, especially since the police don't even think you did it.

You can go after him for false arrest and slander. The people he talked to will have to testify. You can also get a restraining order to keep him away from you. It sounds like he may have mental problems.
